Marine receives new scholarship honoring MU alumnus who died serving in Iraq
Staff Sgt. Michael McGuire on May 2 received a scholarship established in honor of 1st Lt. Mark Gelina, who died last November while serving in Iraq.
McGuire, a Marine majoring in business at the University of Missouri, won the $500 scholarship by demonstrating academic and physical excellence, leadership and integrity, said U.S. Navy Officer Candidate Robert Leidy, who is helping administer the scholarship. Organizers hope to award the scholarship annually, Leidy said.
“This is the right thing to do,” Leidy said. “We’re doing this so people don’t forget who Mark was and what he did for the MU Naval ROTC Battalion.”
The scholarship commemorates the leadership and character of Gelina, who motivated and mentored his shipmates while an active member of Mizzou’s Naval ROTC program. Gelina, who received an MU bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 2005, died on Nov. 4, 2006 while serving in Iraq’s Al Anbar province.
