Alumni join forces with retiring professor to endow scholarship

In the spring of 2015 Associate Professor Paul Chan announced his retirement after 35 years on the MU chemical engineering faculty. It wasn’t an easy decision for him. He enjoys what he does, especially his work as the department’s undergraduate advisor as well as his decade-long position as chair of the College of Engineering’s scholarship committee.

Hubbard scholarship endowed for love of education in honor of a cherished husband

Although Lloyd and Lucille Hubbard had no children of their own, they had a soft spot in her heart for children. Lucille died in July 2012, and recently, the college learned that a bequest in her will swelled the Lloyd S. Hubbard Memorial Fund to nearly $1 million.

Donor touched by letters from scholarship recipients

Ruth Atkinson, a 1940 graduate of the MU College of Human Environmental Sciences, endowed the Donald B. Atkinson Scholarship Fund in memory of her late husband. She kept every letter she received from grateful recipients.

Friendship influences a choice to study engineering, later models engineering scholarship

Guy and Louise Hackmann saw a photo of a longtime friend’s daughter at the Mizzou Engineering scholarship dinner representing her father’s endowment. It inspired them to also endow a scholarship.

Bench dedicated in honor of Nell Lafferre

When Nell Lafferre passed away in June 2013, the Jefferson Club Trustees decided to honor the memory and efforts of their spunky colleague, doing so by dedicating a bench in her honor.

Engineering foundation receives affiliation approval

In May, the University of Missouri formally recognized the MU College of Engineering (UMCOE) Foundation as an affiliated 501(c)(3) organization, after approval from the Chancellor’s Office and the University Board of Curators. The affiliation status allows UMCOE Foundation to accept and act as stewards of gifts to MU Engineering with University partnership.

Engineering legacy: Endowments are forever

James S. Rollins, “father” of the University of Missouri, was instrumental in the land grant university’s placement in Columbia. He also created the first endowed scholarship in 1888, which each year is still awarded to six undergraduates, including a civil engineering major.
