A joint degree program administered through the School of Engineering and the Crosby MBA Program is available for students who wish to earn a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BS IT) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Individuals interested in pursuing engineering and business will find that this program provides them with a valuable set of skills to excel in this rapidly growing field. If earned separately, the BS IT degree would take four years and the MBA degree would take two years. The dual degrees may be completed in five years assuming normal progress toward each degree.
BS IT/MBA students are sought after by a variety of companies because they have a strong technology and analytical skills combined with their business competencies. The complex problems facing today’s organizations often require that the engineer’s analytical ability be applied simultaneously with the manager’s integrative perspective.
The curriculum has been designed so that business essentials are addressed by courses in at least one of the departments, and then specialized courses are pursued in the upper levels. Waivers for MBA classes are based upon equivalent offerings in the BS IT program. Prospective students should work directly with the BS IT adviser listed below as early as possible in their BS IT program so that they take all necessary courses in the correct sequence. BS IT students must take Stats 3500, Econ 1014 and IMSE 2710 as part of their coursework in order to qualify for the waivers for the MBA program.
Students who apply and are admitted to the Crosby MBA program will take 6 credit hours of MBA courses during each of the fall and spring semesters of their senior year. The remaining 30.5 MBA credits will be taken the year following completion of the BS IT, for a total of 42.5 business credits. When a student is enrolled in the dual program, the BS IT degree requirements will decrease by 6 hours of elective credits in order to give the student more room in their schedule their senior year to be able to start taking MBA coursework.
Applicants to the dual degree program must complete an MBA departmental application and a Change of Division form and meet admission standards. Applications are typically submitted during the junior year. Students may take either the GMAT or GRE and early application is encouraged.
