50th Anniversary

Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BS IE)

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering undergraduates take a curriculum similar to all engineering students during the first two years. However, in addition to basic science, mathematics, and engineering courses, industrial engineers take courses in statistics, operations research, and computer applications. Additional background in the behavioral sciences is necessary to design complex systems in which people can operate effectively.

Advising

You will be assigned to a faculty member who will be your academic advisor throughout the time you are an industrial engineering student. Your advisor will help you select courses each semester and provide guidance and help in achieving your academic goals.

Credits Requirements

The College of Engineering requires a minimum of 126 semester credit hours in approved courses for graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree. You may be required to take some remedial courses (for example, algebra, trigonometry and English composition) to prepare yourself for the required curriculum. Hours earned in the remedial courses do not count toward the 127 hour BSIE requirement or in your grade point average as figured for graduation. To be recommended for a bachelor of science in industrial engineering, a student must earn a UM system GPA of at least 2.0, and earn at least 2.0 in all UM system courses taken that have an Engineering (ENGR, BE, ChE, CE, CS, ECE, IMSE, MAE, NE) designation. For the requirement involving courses with an Engineering designation, only the last grade in a repeated course will be used in the calculation. Finally, IMSE 2110 and 2210 require a C- or better in order to take the courses that require them as prerequisites.

IMSE Course Requirements

The IMSE BSIE curriculum also requires three (3) hours of engineering electives, six (6) hours of IMSE electives, and six (6) hours of technical electives. Technical electives are courses related or relevant to industrial engineering, but not required within the IMSE program of study. Students have taken technical electives from a broad range of fields: computer science, general engineering (ENGR), different engineering disciplines (CE, ME, EE, etc.), mathematics, and business (accounting, finance, management, marketing). All technical electives must be approved by your advisor.

Courses that do not count toward any degree program in Engineering are physical education courses and remedial courses, such as Math 1100, 1160, and 1180. Also excluded are Military Science and ROTC courses, with the exception of up to nine hours of advanced ROTC, which can be counted only for students who have fulfilled all departmental degree requirements and are commissioned in a branch of the Armed Forces.

General Education Requirements

The College of Engineering, in compliance with the general education requirements of the University, requires a student to complete nine credit hours in each of the following categories:

  1. Social/Behavioral Sciences
  2. Humanities/Fine Arts

In one of these nine-hour blocks, one course must be upper division (2000+), and at least two disciplines must be represented in each of the two categories. A listing of Humanities/Fine Arts and Social/Behavioral Sciences courses that meet the requirements for general education can be found at generaleducation.missouri.edu. Foreign language will be accepted for Humanities credit if the student has completed a minimum of twelve hours in the specific foreign language.

All industrial engineering students are required to have an economics course. Economics 1014, 1024 or 1051H will meet the economics requirement. This economics course will also fulfill 3 hours of your Social and Behavioral Sciences requirements.

In addition, students are required by State Constitutional mandate to complete a course in American history or American government.

  • History 1100 Survey of American History to 1865
  • History 1200 Survey of American History Since 1865
  • History 1400 American History
  • History 2210 Twentieth Century American History
  • History 2440 History of Missouri, History 4000 Age of Jefferson
  • History 4220 U.S. Society Between the Wars 1918-1945
    or
History 4230 Our Times: United States Since 1945
    or
    Political Science 1100 American Government
    or
    Political Science 2100 State Government

Taking this class will meet the state constitutional requirement. This history/government course will fulfill 3 hours of your Social and Behavioral Sciences requirement.
