A student may receive up to three (3) hours of credit in IMSE 4085 for an internship/co-op work experience if the employment meets the following criteria:
- The student must be employed on a full-time basis for 40 hours per week for a minimum of eight weeks.
- The student must be employed in an IE related field.
- The student’s employment activities must be IE relevant work that can be verified.
In order to receive credit for the work experience, the student must the complete the following:
- 1. The student must choose a faculty advisor and submit a work abstract discussing the potential IE related aspects of the proposed work to the faculty advisor and the director of undergraduate studies for approval.
- The work experience for credit must be approved before the employment begins.
- The faculty advisor will oversee the student’s IMSE 4085 problems course and assign a grade for the credit hours.
- In order to receive credit for the work experience, the student must receive a C or better for their grade in IMSE 4085.
- The grade for IMSE 4085 will be determined by the following:
- The student must maintain a daily Log Book of activities and observations.
- The student must write a paper detailing their activities during their employment. This paper must contain specific examples of IE related work done. Additionally, the paper must include sections describing what IE tools were used during their employment, what new tools were learned, and what IE tools to be learned in the future would have been beneficial to the work they were doing. A specialized format for the paper will be used (see the director of undergraduate studies for a sample of the specified format.)
- The student must also make an oral presentation to their faculty advisor based on their work and the written paper.
- Required forms that must be completed prior to registering for IMSE 4085.
Please note that the credit for IMSE 4085 can be applied either as an IMSE elective or as a technical elective.
If a student wishes to use IMSE 4085 as a technical elective, the work experience need not be IE related, but must be engineering related. If the student wishes to use IMSE 4085 as an IMSE elective, the work experience must be IE related.
A student can receive at most three (3) hours of credit for IMSE 4085 for work experience. A student may receive credit for other approved problems courses under IMSE 4085.
