About Engineering
A civil engineering class taught at the University of Missouri in 1849 marked MU’s first foray into educating engineers.
Today, 1,800 of the brightest undergraduate students on university’s campus and over 400 exceptional graduate students make up the diverse student body of Mizzou Engineering.

Student Opportunities
In addition to an excellent education in classrooms and labs led by skilled faculty members, students are encouraged and even mentored to develop skills in entrepreneurship, leadership, and teamwork.
Exceptional students have the opportunity to become a part of the undergraduate research program and work cooperatively with an accomplished faculty member on a research project beginning the second half of their sophomore year.
Research
Fully 17 research programs have been designated as areas in which Mizzou Engineering faculty members demonstrate exemplary expertise and success. The college is a significant contributor to the University’s annual research and development spending, helping to create new jobs as they train the workforce that will fill them.
Variety of Opportunity
As a college affiliated with the Missouri’s Land Grant University, Mizzou Engineering students have boundless opportunities to pursue additional educational and extra-curricular activities on campus. Few schools can claim the variety of programs and facilities that are offered at Mizzou, creating opportunities for multidisciplinary study and research. In addition to the college of engineering, MU is home to a school of medicine, a college of veterinary medicine and The University of Missouri research reactor.
Outside of class
Two-dozen student organizations and design teams offer a variety of opportunities for undergraduates to get involved, make friends and excel as students and future engineers. An award-winning recreational facility is also available for student use.
K-12 & Community School Involvement
Engineering is host to numerous K-12 activities, including Lego camps, summer programs, and weekend events. In addition, we also develop workshops for high school and college teachers.
Future Plans
In fall 2007 ground was broken for Phase I of a $120 million overall renovation plan. The multiyear plan will rebuild the college into an interdisciplinary teaching and research hub. The first phase is a $21 million renovation project that calls for razing the high bay portion of Lafferre Hall — built in 1922 — and replacing it with upgraded classrooms and undergraduate teaching and research labs. Funding for the reconstruction comes from a $2 million federal grant and a $19 million loan approved by the University of Missouri Board of Curators. When the college is able to add classroom and lab space, it is also able to increase the number of faculty and students. Additional graduates from Mizzou Engineering means an enhanced ability to meet the growing need for engineering professionals in this country and around the world.
