Mizzou graduate student Rebecca Whiting recently won a research award from the University of Missouri Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (MU-iCATS), for a project that aims to reduce blindness from retinal degeneration by injecting protective proteins directly into the eyes. It's a lofty goal, but for her, it's personal.

Chemical engineering adds a student lounge
An MU College of Engineering renovation project that began with the razing of the high bay portion of Lafferre Hall in early in 2008 is nearing completion, with dedication slated for early November. The reconstruction, which will add upgraded classrooms, labs and student commons, is not the only new student-centric space being added within Mizzou Engineering.

IMSE student selected for honor scholarship
"Industrial engineering is different than other engineering disciplines," said Wade Foster, a May graduate from the College of Engineering's IMSE program. "It gave me the opportunity to study broad applications in process related engineering that will allow me to work in almost any field, which is great for someone like me who doesn¿t know exactly what I want to go into." Foster just learned that he is the recipient of a $1,500 Lift Manufacturers Product Section Honor Scholarship from the Material Handling Industry of America's Education Foundation.

New environmental student organization profiled
University of Missouri Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Enos Inniss was recognized in the Fall 2008 issue of Current, a publication of the Missouri Water Environment Association. Inniss was acknowledged for assisting in the establishment of a Water Environment Federation's student chapter at the University of Missouri. "Dr. Inniss has energized grass roots support of a group of graduate students that have submitted application for a new Student Chapter of WEF at Mizzou", the article stated.

Mizzou Engineering team wins national competition
Mizzou Engineering's seismic design team has won its first outing in a national seismic design competition. MU's three-member team won a $500 prize July 29 by taking top honors in a first-time competition sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, the Transportation Research Board, the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research. Four other teams from across the nation were selected to compete in the contest, held during the 6th National Seismic Conference on Bridges and Highways in Charleston, South Carolina.

Mizzou team steering towards the hydrogen highway

After 15 years of building a solar car for competition, the team decided in late 2005 to steer instead towards the "hydrogen highway" by constructing a fuel cell car. Mizzou Engineering student team designs better septic tank
A Mizzou Engineering student team is devising a new type of septic tank that would better protect the environment. About 25 percent of the U.S. population-and 40 percent of new developments-use septic systems, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Web site statistics. But wastewater treated and released by many septic systems still contains nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, that stimulate the growth of oxygen-hoarding algae, experts say.

Eight Mizzou students are competing for the first time later this month in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' (AIChE) annual Chem-E-Car Competition. When engineering success is a hot potato
Some hot potatoes are easier to come by than others. Or so members of CoE Assistant Professor Gary Solbrekken's thermal systems design class recently found as they strove to cook baked potatoes in solar ovens of their own design. Armed with cardboard boxes, mirrors, duct tape and a host of other inexpensive materials, Solbrekken's engineering students built and tested their homemade solar cookers on May 9 as a hands-on final examination.
