Freshman Interest Groups (FIGS) & Learning Communities
You might think the MU Campus is so big that it has its own zip code. Well, it is, and it does (65211) but if that intimidates you, take a look at our Freshmen Interest Groups and Learning communities. You'll get that small campus experience without the culture shock of being one in over 30,000 MU students.
Be part of a small community
Freshmen Interest Groups (FIG) are a great way to make a big campus seem a bit smaller. The College of Engineering has 9 different engineering FIG groups; six are men of engineering and 3 are co-ed engineering FIGs. The Men of Engineering FIGs live in Wolpers Hall, which is a community style dorm. The Co-Ed Engineering FIGs live in Mark Twain, which is a suite style dorm.
The students in a FIG are co-enrolled in three classes with 15-20 other students. The classes are a combination of Math, Humanities or Social/Behavioral and other Engineering required class. Figs are also enrolled in a one-credit weekly seminar class. FIGS also provided the opportunity to develop relationships with both upperclassman and a faculty or staff member in their field of interest. These relationships are key in helping get through the first semester and year in college.
