Center for Ultrashort, Ultraintense Lasers

The Center for Ultrashort, Ultraintense Lasers is led by Professor JK Chen in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.

This center, which seeks to harness the potential of ultrashort lasers that offer the unprecedented, extremely high pulsed power and short time of interaction with matter, creates research opportunities in national defense, medicine and manufacturing. Possible military applications of our laser research include the development of lethal and non-lethal weaponry, remote sensing devices and the detection of bioweapons.

Such lasers also may be used to detect and treat cancer cells or for microsurgery, as well as for physics, chemistry and material science-related applications.
