Welcome New Faculty

The College of Engineering is excited to announce new faculty hires for the upcoming academic year, many of which are joint hires. These new faculty members bring world-class expertise, strong research capabilities and the ability to shape engineering students into future engineering leaders while supporting our pillars of pursuit.

Big Data Analytics

Derek Anderson, associate professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Derek joined the college in January as an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. He is a core member of the MU Informatics Institute (MUII), and an intermittent faculty member with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Previously he was with the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at Mississippi State University.

Anderson earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Wichita State University with a minor in mathematics, a master’s in computer science from MU, and a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from MU. 

Gergei Bana, assistant professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Gergei joins MU as a jointly-appointed faculty member in the College of Engineering and Mathematics.  He previously served as a fixed-term research engineer at INRIA Paris-Rocquencourt and a fixed-term research engineer for Microsoft.

Bana earned a master’s in statistics from the Wharton School, and a master of science equivalent degree in physics from Faculty of Sciences of Eotvos University, Budapest. His doctorate is in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Syed Kamrul Islam, professor and chair, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Islam took over as head of EECS effective July 1. Islam previously served as a professor, James W. McConnell Endowed Chair and associate head for Academic Affairs of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Islam earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1983, then earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Connecticut in 1987 and 1994, respectively. He began his postdoctoral career in academia at the University of North Florida in 1994 before joining the University of Tennessee in 1999.

Wei Jiang, associate professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Jiang joins MU as a jointly-appointed faculty member in the College of Engineering and Trulaske College of Business. He previously served as associate chair for Graduate Studies & External Affairs and an associate professor of Computer Science at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Jiang earned his bachelor’s degrees in computer science and mathematics from the University of Iowa. His master’s and doctoral degrees are in computer science from Purdue University.

Dan Lin, associate professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Lin joins MU as a jointly-appointed faculty member in the College of Engineering and Trulaske College of Business. She previously served as an associate professor of computer science and the director of the Cybersecurity Laboratory at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Lin earned her bachelor’s degree in computer science from Fudan University in China and doctorate in computer science from the National University of Singapore.

Petros Valettas, assistant professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Valettas joins the full-time faculty at MU as a jointly-appointed faculty member in the College of Engineering and the Mathematics Department in the College of Arts & Science, where he’s served as a postdoctoral fellow since 2015. Prior to that, he was a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University.

Valettas earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in mathematics from the University of Athens in Greece.

Biomedical Innovations

Yi Zhang, assistant professor, Bioengineering: Zhang joins Mizzou Engineering after spending the last two years as a postdoctoral resident at Northwestern University, and he spent a year of that time also working as a visiting scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Zhang earned his bachelor’s in chemical engineering from the Dalian University of Technology in China and his doctorate in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech.

Sustainability InFEWSed

Damon Hall, assistant professor Bioengineering: Hall joined MU in May and serves as a jointly-appointed faculty member of the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources.  He previously held a postdoctoral research fellowship in sustainability science at the University of Maine.

Hall earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture and his master’s in communication from Purdue University. His doctorate is in wildlife and fisheries sciences from Texas A& M University.

Kiruba Krishnaswamy, assistant professor, Bioengineering: Krishnaswamy joined Mizzou Engineering in April after spending two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto.

She earned her bachelor’s in food process engineering from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in India. Her master’s is in food and agriculture process engineering, and her doctorate is in bioresource engineering from McGill University in Montreal.

Hussein Nassar, assistant professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering: Nassar previously served as an assistant research professor in the MAE Department at MU, where he helped mentor multiple doctoral candidates and published several peer-reviewed journal articles.

Nassar earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Paris-Est University in France, his master’s in materials science from Mines-ParisTech in France, and his bachelor’s in mathematics from Paris VI University.

Xueju Wang, assistant professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering: Wang joins the MU Engineering faculty after two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Wang earned her bachelor’s in chemical engineering from the Dalian University of Technology in China. Her master’s and doctoral degrees are in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech.

Binbin Wang, assistant professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering: Wang joins the MU Engineering faculty after two years as an assistant research scientist at the Geochemical and Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University and three years as a postdoctoral research associate at Texas A&M.

He earned his bachelor’s in physics from Anhui Normal University in China, a master’s in fire science and engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China and a doctorate in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Matthias Young, assistant professor, Chemical Engineering: Young joins the full-time faculty at MU as a jointly-appointed faculty member in the College of Engineering and the Chemistry Department in the College of Arts & Science. Since 2017, he’s served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Argonne National Laboratory.

Young earned his bachelor’s in chemical engineering from MU, then earned his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Soumen Jana, assistant professor, Bioengineering: Jana joins the University of Missouri after working as a research associate in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic.

Jana earned his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from the University of North Bengal in India and his master’s in mechanical engineering from North Dakota State University. His doctorate is in materials science and engineering from the University of Washington.
