Mizzou Engineering’s Guoliang Huang has been named a Fellow of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

SPIE Fellows are members of the Society who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics and imaging.

Huang is Huber and Helen Croft Chair in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research focuses on addressing challenges in development of passive and active metamaterials for wave propagation and noise control, mechanical topological insulator, vibration and sound mitigation, energy harvesting, bio-sensing and more. He made significant contributions to the advancement of new knowledge and breakthrough in these areas. He has been widely recognized for his pioneering contributions to active metamaterials.

In 2021, he built a simulated environment in which he observed acoustic waves in four-dimensional space and created an artificial material that can sense and adapt to its environment. Huang has published more than 150 first class international journal papers, along with one book and four chapters in other books.

In addition to innovative research and breakthrough discoveries, SPIE fellows are recognized for their contributions to the Society.

Huang also serves as associate editor of Wave Motion and specialty chief editor in the Physical Acoustics and Ultrasonics section of Frontiers in Physics.
