James W. and Joan M. O’Neill Fellowship in Engineering

The James W. and Joan M. O’Neill Fellowship was created in 2018 to support students pursuing Ph.D. and master’s degrees at the University of Missouri, with an emphasis on Evans Scholars who wish to pursue such degrees. Awardees will receive between $5,000-10,000.

The priority deadline is Monday, May 13, 2024.

Who qualifies?
  • Graduate students in the College of Engineering who have shown promise and excellence in undergraduate study.
  • Priority will be given to students pursuing degrees focused in the areas of aerospace, Big Data analytics, structural analysis or technological advances in city infrastructure or other priority areas identified by the dean.
  • Preference given to Evans Scholars.
About Jim O’Neill

Jim O’Neill caddied at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, and received the Evans Scholarship in 1977 to the University of Missouri. O’Neill’s four years at the Evans Scholar house at Mizzou provided great leadership and fellowship growth for him. He served as president of the house his junior and senior years.

O’Neill began his career at Boeing in 1982 as a structural engineer after receiving a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri. He enjoyed a 35-year career at Boeing before retiring in 2017.

He has served as a director of the Western Golf Association for over a decade. O’Neill feels strongly about giving back to Evans Scholars Foundation. He is a Match Play Partner and is a member of the WGA Caddie Committee. He also serves on Mizzou’s College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Committee.
