Praveen Rao

Biography

Praveen Rao’s research interests are in the areas of scalable AI, data science, health informatics and cybersecurity. Specifically, he focuses on developing scalable algorithms and techniques for managing, learning, and reasoning using big data and advanced cyber-infrastructure. He directs the Scalable AI & Data Science (SDS) Lab at MU. His research, teaching and outreach activities have been supported by federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Department of Education, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He is a co-investigator for the Center for Telehealth Research and Policy (C-TRaP) at MU funded by HRSA. He was a core scientist of the Washington University Center for Diabetes Translation Research funded by NIH. He serves as the director of graduate studies for the David L. Payne Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). His recent awards at MU include the EECS Outstanding Senior Faculty Researcher Award (2025), the Institute for Data Science and Informatics (IDSI) Excellence in Mentoring Award (2025), and the EECS Senior Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring Award (2023). He is a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the ACM and the IEEE.
