Inspired by a history of success that fosters excellence and collaboration across campus, Mizzou Engineering is proud to announce new degree programs designed to meet the evolving needs of our world.

This fall, three new undergraduate degree programs will be launched, providing opportunities for Mizzou Made engineers to become leaders in the rapidly growing fields of data science, engineering technology and environmental engineering. These innovative programs exemplify Mizzou’s commitment to expanding horizons and shaping the future of engineering.

“We are proud to introduce our data science, engineering technology and environmental engineering programs,” Roger Fales, associate dean for academic programs, said. “These degrees are highly sought after by employers both locally and globally. We are excited to offer our students these opportunities to delve into their interests while addressing the needs expressed by our industry partners.”

With courses led by world-class faculty and opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research, students in the new programs will graduate fully prepared for exciting careers.

Data science

Data scientists find meaning in raw numbers and patterns in chaos. As the field gains popularity, the demand for highly skilled data science graduates is only increasing. Employers need young professionals with training as dynamic as the field itself.

The new data science program at Mizzou is a multidisciplinary program created from a partnership between the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Science. Students in the program can choose from three tracks—computer science, mathematics and statistics—to customize their degree based on what type of work they intend to pursue.

“This program is designed for the rapidly growing data science field,” Syed Kamrul Islam, chair of electrical engineering and computer science, said. “Combining computer science, statistics and mathematics, the program equips students with skills to analyze large data sets and solve real-world problems.”

Engineering technology

The engineering technology program at Mizzou focuses on the practical application of engineering principles. Emphasizing hands-on learning, students will gain real-world skills in state-of-the-art labs, including the recently opened manufacturing lab in Lafferre Hall.

“We’re excited to offer this undergraduate degree for students interested in getting hands-on, practical engineering skills,” Hani Salim, department chair of engineering and information technology, said. “Specializations in manufacturing and mechatronics will prepare graduates for diverse industries including construction, government and manufacturing.”

The demand for graduates with this level of technological expertise is massive, and the college is stepping up to meet this need in our region, designed to support the unique needs of employers. Students will utilize cutting-edge technologies to solve tomorrow’s problems.

Environmental engineering

Housed in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, this program combines disciplines, including biological, chemical, and civil engineering, to address pressing global environmental challenges. The new degree program focuses on important environmental topics such as water quality, pollution, waste management, and sustainability.

“The program offers practical, hands-on experiences that prepare graduates for roles in engineering firms, government and conservation agencies,” said Praveen Edara, interim dean and civil and environmental engineering department chair. “As demand for sustainable solutions grows, Mizzou will be equipping the next generation of environmental engineers with the skills necessary to build a more sustainable world.”

Faculty in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering have made strides in and contributed to the field for years. Mizzou co-hosted the 2023 Mid-American Environmental Engineering Conference (MAEEC) last October. The department has also hired world-class faculty through the MizzouForward program.
