Turning passion into a career: Crews earns information technology degree

December 04, 2024

Kaelyn Crews

Kaelyn Crews, a soon-to-be information technology graduate, always knew she would go to Mizzou. It was never a question, coming from a family of Tiger fans in the small town of Prairie Home less than an hour from campus.

She chose to study information technology because of her passion for technology and programming. Over the past few years, she has been actively involved in the Mizzou Computing Association, connecting with others who share her enthusiasm.

After graduating, Crews will pursue a master’s in science with an emphasis on healthcare technology, using her experience and passion to help save lives.

Read on for a Q&A with Crews about her Mizzou Engineering Experience.

What made you interested in your major?

I have always loved computers. I have very fond memories of sitting down at my family’s box computer, playing games with my little sister over my shoulder. I always joke that I speak computer better than I speak English and sometimes I think that’s true! What fascinates me most is the logic behind how computers work. There’s something so satisfying about breaking down a problem into smaller pieces, finding a solution, and seeing it all come together perfectly—like solving a puzzle.

As I’ve learned more, I’ve come to appreciate how programming and technology can be used to solve real-world problems. Whether it’s creating software, optimizing systems, or even working on something as impactful as healthcare technology, the logic and structure of computing feel natural to me. It’s a field that constantly challenges me while also allowing me to be creative; and that’s why I know I made the right choice.

What’s your favorite thing about Mizzou information technology?

The amazing faculty are not only incredibly knowledgeable but also genuinely invested in their students’ success. They go above and beyond to make complex concepts understandable, encourage curiosity and provide guidance inside and outside the classroom.

I also love how the electives let you tailor your education to your interests. There’s such a wide range of classes to choose from—everything from website development and app development to motion graphics and animation to cybersecurity and networking. Plus, the 4 certificates available in the program provide a great way to stand out and get a leg up once you graduate. It’s been exciting to shape my degree around the topics that inspire me the most.

What’s your favorite Mizzou Engineering memory?

My favorite memories are from TigerHacks, Mizzou’s weekend-long hackathon. There’s nothing quite like the energy and excitement of spending 36 hours brainstorming, coding, and collaborating with a team to bring an idea to life. It’s a whirlwind of creativity and problem-solving, fueled by coffee, snacks, and the shared drive to make something awesome.

TigerHacks gave me the chance to connect with other students, learn new technologies on the fly, and push my limits. It wasn’t just about the projects we built—it was about the teamwork, the late-night laughs, and the satisfaction of presenting something we created from scratch. Those weekends are some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I’ve had at Mizzou.

Why are you proud to be a Tiger?

I’m proud to be a Tiger because of the sense of community and tradition that Mizzou embodies. From the passionate school spirit to the incredible opportunities the university offers, being part of Mizzou means being part of something bigger than yourself.

Mizzou has given me the chance to grow, both academically and personally, through the support of amazing faculty, engaging coursework and the friendships I’ve built along the way. I’m especially proud to represent a university that values innovation and strives to empower its students to make a difference in the world. Being a Tiger means carrying those values with you wherever you go.

What’s next for you after graduation?

I am planning to pursue my master’s in science with an emphasis on healthcare technology. I’m passionate about using technology to make a meaningful impact, and healthcare is an area where innovation can truly change lives. My goal is to be part of the next generation of healthcare—working on solutions that improve diagnoses, treatments, and overall patient care. This field combines my love for technology with the opportunity to make a real difference, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.
