Benton Vahle, a sophomore industrial engineering student, took first place in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering’s annual Undergraduate Research Competition. The award comes with a cash prize and funding to attend a research conference.
Vahle’s poster, “Intelligent Design Method for Waveguide-based Longitudinal – Torsional Ultrasonic Transducers,” explores using artificial intelligence to optimize complex geometry used in machining and biomedical applications. His work was advised by Yi Wang.
The ISE Undergraduate Research competition was proposed a couple of years ago by Jung Hyup Kim, an associate professor in the department, and is funded by the ISE Hall of Fame.
Ella Swaters and Matt Floyd tied for second in the competition. Swatters is a junior industrial engineering student. At the competition, she presented work titled, “The Impact of Verbal Nudges on Learning Performance in Augmented Reality,” which was advised by Kim.
Floyd, a senior, presented the project, “Development of an Intelligent Truck Transportation Management Application,” which was advised by Sharan Srinivas.
Other student presentations
“Intelligent Decision Support System for Steel Market Analysis,” was presented by Thomas Willerth and advised by Sharan Srinivas and Jim Noble.
“A Multi-Criteria Decision Making Approach for Selecting a Healthcare Waste Disposal Facility,” was presented by Abbosjon Abdullaev and advised by Suchi Rajendran.
“Federated Learning for Anomaly Detection: A Review of the State of the Art and Future Directions,” was presented by Caden Davis and advised by Hyeong Suk Na.
“Exploring Physical Demand Metric: Slouching Score in Augmented Reality-based Biomechanics Education,” was presented by Will Mastrantuono and advised by Jung Hyup Kim.
