Jacob Smith was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Columbia during high school. He graduates in December 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a minor in mathematics, and a passion for finding ways to bridge art and engineering.

Mechanical engineering has always seemed like the obvious thing for me to do.

I grew up constantly doing arts and crafts, and during high school I started to take my projects more seriously when I began to make and sell jewelry.

My favorite memories are the late nights.

I have loved having classmates who will stick around in the study rooms late at night making sure we meet midnight deadlines before walking over to Domino’s and celebrating with some pizza.

I’ve been involved in several activities inside and outside Engineering.

I’ve been a peer mentor, an undergraduate research assistant for two labs, a grader and a teaching assistant. I’ve also studied at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, participated in the Global Tigers Connect program and frequented the Riso Room in the School of Visual Studies.

I’m passionate about finding ways to bridge art and engineering.

I’m going to be spending the next year working in industry while creating a product portfolio in preparation for grad school applications. My long-term goal is to work in product design and continue my jewelry work.
