Civil and Environmental Engineering

Biography

Wonsuh Sung is an assistant research professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, following his MS and BS in civil engineering from Inha University, South Korea. His research integrates traditional structural engineering with modern data-driven methodologies, focusing on structural reliability analysis, machine learning applications and predictive modeling for structural performance. His doctoral dissertation focused on enhancing shear capacity predictions for prestressed concrete beams using these data-driven methods. Sung’s master’s research involved developing and validating an evaluation system for backfill grouting in TBM tunnels. Dedicated to an inclusive, student-centered teaching philosophy, Sung is focused on promoting critical thinking and active, real-world learning.

At Texas A&M, he served as the graduate assistant Lecturer for Mechanics of Materials (CVEN 305), where he designed the course curriculum, delivered lectures and managed all instruction for 94 undergraduate students. He also has teaching assistant experience in courses such as Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics (CVEN 363) and Dynamic Loads and Structural Behavior (CVEN 657). In recognition of his commitment to education, Sung was awarded the CVEN Graduate Student Excellence Award for Teaching and was named a Fellow of the Academy for Future Faculty.
