Funded by the National Science Foundation, Civil and Environmental (CEE) STEM Scholars are part of a national program to meet the need for well-trained civil engineers. These Scholars, both undergraduate and graduate students, form a diverse group seeking to successfully graduate with an ABET-accredited civil engineering degree.
Logan Wittman is a Columbia, Missouri resident who has always wanted to come to Mizzou. He played football during high school and spends a lot of time outdoors.
We asked him a few questions about being a STEM Scholar at Mizzou.
How did you first get introduced to engineering?
I had a great teacher in high school that showed the fun side of engineering, and it really hooked me on the career.
Why are you interested in pursuing engineering?
I’ve found that engineering really piques my interest, I like to solve problems and the challenge that comes with it. The fact that whatever work I do will have an immediate impact in the community is very fulfilling.
Why did you choose Mizzou Engineering?
I grew up a Mizzou fan here in Columbia. It has always been the goal to go to school at Mizzou, the impressive engineering program really hooked me and kept me in Columbia.
How has being a STEM Scholar helped you at Mizzou Engineering?
The community of support that comes with the STEM Scholar group is amazing; all of us are willing to help one another when in need. The support from Dr. Vellore Gopalaratnam is also very helpful to make sure that I won’t ever fall behind in my work.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider applying for the STEM Scholarship?
There is no reason not to apply, the benefits that come with this scholarship significantly outweigh the time it takes to fill out the application.
What’s been your best experience at Mizzou Engineering to date?
My best experience with Mizzou Engineering so far has been the Career Fair. Being able to present myself to companies as a freshman is a great opportunity.
Why would you recommend Mizzou Engineering to others?
Mizzou Engineering has great resources to get students to where they want to be with their careers. There is a wide variety of course content that can accommodate each engineering student. Each professor here loves what they do and is set on putting you in the best position to thrive.
Thanks for sharing, Logan!
