Sarah Orton received the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) St. Louis Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award at the organization’s annual awards dinner Sept. 19.
The award recognizes any faculty/practitioner advisor who supports ASCE student chapters and civil engineering students.
“It is my pleasure and privilege to mentor students and help them discover the shape of their futures,” Orton said. “I’m inspired every day by our students’ passion and commitment, and I look forward to continuing to foster their growth and success in civil engineering.”
As advisor to the ASCE student chapter at Mizzou, Orton helps organize the group’s annual fall barbecue to encourage new students to join.
Orton is a professor and the director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), where she works to ensure degree programs meet the needs of students as well as those of the profession.
“Dr. Orton’s commitment to mentoring, inspiring and connecting with the next generation of engineers embody the very best of our mission,” said CEE Chair Praveen Edara. “We are incredibly proud to have her as a colleague and leader, shaping our students and the future of our profession.”
