Mizzou Engineering has been producing career-ready graduates with the experience and skills employers need for more than 150 years. That tradition was on display Sept. 11 as students connected with small businesses, government agencies and international corporations, looking for opportunities to change the world for the better.

More than 1,500 students swarmed the courts of MizzouRec for the Mizzou Engineering Career and Internship Fair, where more than 200 employers were on site to meet the next generation of engineers

Students came prepared with resumes and big visions. Biomedical engineering senior Torrance Bostick was looking for co-ops and full-time opportunities with companies that develop and produce medical devices.

“I want to lift up others,” he said. “I want to use my abilities to help others, especially people my age.”

Mechanical engineering senior Peter Dailey II was looking to launch his career in energy engineering or mechanical design.

“I’m passionate about renewable energy,” he said. “I want to reduce the carbon footprint of my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, make it more eco-friendly, and eventually start my own energy engineering company.”

Burns and McDonnell staff civil engineer Brent Windsor (BS CiE ’20) was among the hundreds of recruiters at the fair. As a Mizzou alumnus, he already knew that Mizzou Engineering students were well prepared to deliver on the job thanks to their experience with classes, competition teams and student organizations. He also emphasized the importance of soft skills.

“Employers are looking for a mix of technical and interpersonal skills,” Windsor said. “Being able to communicate effectively is really big in the engineering industry.”

Sam Zupko, university relations recruiter for Garmin, was at the fair to connect with students interested in intern and entry-level opportunities.

“We’re excited to meet candidates who are passionate about problem-solving, innovation and contributing to products that make a meaningful impact in people’s everyday lives,” she said.

Zupko encouraged students to get involved on campus.

“We value hands-on exploration, and you’re set apart when you can speak to your contributions in and out of the classroom,” she said. “Mizzou Engineering offers so many wonderful programs and experiences, take advantage of the support as often as possible.”
