Stephen Stinger (BS CiE ’09, MS CiE ’11), the newly appointed president of the Mizzou Engineering Alumni Organization (MUEAO), brings deep institutional knowledge and fresh ideas to the role.

Stinger’s roots at Mizzou run deep: Steel Bridge Team. St. Pat’s Board. King of Engineers’ Week.
After completing his master’s in 2011, Stinger began his career at Black & Veatch in Overland Park, Kansas, thanks in part to a connection made during a Dean’s Advisory Council meeting.
“The Steel Bridge Team was asked to present to the Dean’s Advisory Council,” Stinger said. “Black & Veatch Senior Vice President Lee Kupfer [BS CiE ’71] was there. He was impressed with our team, so he gave me his business card. I followed up with him later, and he set up an interview for me.”
Today, Stinger is a structural engineer in Black & Veatch’s Power business, where he primarily designs steel structures and concrete foundations. He has also contributed to projects in the federal, water and telecommunications sectors.
Despite a demanding career, Stinger remains deeply committed to Mizzou. He previously served on the Mizzou Engineering Recent Alumni Development Board, now merged with MUEAO, and frequently returns for Engineers’ Week, Homecoming, and football and basketball games.
“I want to help current students have the same great experience I had,” he said.
Stinger emphasizes visibility and impact as top priorities for MUEAO.
“Many students don’t know what MUEAO is,” he said. “We want to change that by funding more scholarships, organizing more events and building relationships with students.”
Stinger credits former MUEAO President Bill Alkemeyer (BS ME ’91) with steadying the organization during COVID.
“Bill brought the group back to what it was,” he said. “We all appreciate his passion for student engagement and scholarships.”
Looking ahead, Stinger aims to make MUEAO more active and inclusive by attracting more recent grads, expand networking events beyond the I-70 corridor, and growing the group’s scholarship endowment.
“MUEAO is for anyone who loves Mizzou Engineering and wants to give back,” he said. “Whether you have a lot of time or just a little, you’re welcome to join.”
