Biography
Gary McKenzie is an instructor in the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering and a PhD student in Computer Science. He brings more than a decade of professional experience in healthcare information technology, software development, systems integration and technical leadership into the classroom. Professionally, Gary works in healthcare technology, where he focuses on healthcare interoperability, system integration and the design and support of complex clinical data interfaces.
He has extensive experience working with HL7, enterprise healthcare systems and large-scale technology implementations. McKenzie is also the founder and developer of Sponserity, a nonprofit technology platform designed to support individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. His doctoral research explores the use of artificial intelligence and natural language processing in digital recovery support, with a particular interest in understanding and evaluating the relationship between users and AI-based support systems. As an instructor, he enjoys helping students connect computer science concepts with real-world software engineering, system design, and problem-solving challenges.
