The University of Missouri College of Engineering mourns the passing of Matt Maschmann (BS ME ’00, MS ME ’02), a distinguished researcher, instructor and alumnus.
Maschmann was a professor in the John J. Boswell Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research focused on nanoscale materials synthesis and processing, mechanical analysis, machine learning and thermal transport. He authored 50 publications on nanoscale materials.
He was co-founder and co-director of the MU Materials Science and Engineering Institute and co-director of the MU National Science Foundation Research Traineeship program.
Maschmann received the James C. Owens Fund Award for Excellence in Engineering in 2026. In 2025, he received the Mizzou Engineering Senior Faculty Research Award for his commitment to advancing research, teaching excellence and university collaboration. His work earned funding from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy, among others.
“Matt was a Mizzou alumnus, an accomplished researcher and a dedicated faculty member, but those descriptions only begin to capture what he meant to our community,” Mizzou Engineering Dean Marisa Chrysochoou said. “Above all, Matt was a tremendous person. He cared deeply about his work, his students and the people around him, and he represented the very best of who we aspire to be.”
