Emphasis Areas

Geotechnical Emphasis

Build Strong Foundations

Nearly every piece of infrastructure depends on the behavior of soil and rock. Geotechnical engineers investigate earth materials to ensure that buildings, bridges, highways, dams and underground infrastructure remain safe, resilient and sustainable.

At Mizzou, students and researchers explore how earth materials respond to natural hazards, changing environmental conditions and increasing infrastructure demands.

Research Strengths

Research includes:

  • Deep foundation
  • Earthquake engineering
  • Soil and rock mechanics
  • Infrastructure monitoring
  • Earth retention systems
  • Reliability-based design
  • Slope stability
  • Geosystems
  • Environmental geotechnics
  • Subsurface containment
  • Water and containment transport in soils

Facilities

Teaching and research laboratories provide hands-on experience with soil characterization, permeability, consolidation, shear strength and advanced geotechnical testing. Shared laboratory spaces support undergraduate instruction, graduate research and sponsored projects.
