Getting to Know Mizzou Engineering
From lectures and labs to clubs and study abroad programs, Introduction to Engineering (ENGINR 1000) helps new students learn about everything Mizzou Engineering has to offer. The primary goal of this class, which is offered each fall, is designed for those interested in pursuing an engineering degree but not sure which field to pursue. Freshman information technology (IT) student Rianna Ellis credits the class for helping her decide to pursue an IT degree and being more comfortable with engineering overall. “It was useful to go in-depth about each type of engineering, and it helped me determine to go into…

CEE’s Shoman wins Intelligent Transportation System research competition
CEE doctoral student Maged Shoman Civil and environmental engineering doctoral student Maged Shoman won the research poster competition at the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) Heartland annual meeting in November 2021. His poster, “Evaluation of Connected Vehicles Data for Congestion & Incident Detection,” highlighted how this pilot project used data from actual roadway experiences instead of estimated data points. He worked on this project with his advisor, Assistant Professor Yaw Adu-Gyamfi. “This is the first study I am aware of to integrate real-world connected vehicle data rather than simulated data,” he said. “We analyzed the short-, medium- and long-term…

Research Team Training AI to Better Detect Small Objects Shang working with Missouri
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is good at recognizing a single bird in an image. Where it falls short is when it tries to identify hundreds of tiny birds in an aerial photo. Professor Yi Shang and his research team have been working for three years to see where AI can improve its vision when it comes to small objects.

CAVE to Provide Immersive Virtual Experience
Imagine studying a protein by walking through its three-dimensional structure. Or researching traffic patterns by standing alongside a virtual highway. Or safely exploring the structural integrity of a house while it’s on fire. Mizzou Engineers will soon have the capability to do these things, thanks to a CAVE opening this year in Lafferre Hall.
